How we do it
As an ethical and responsible travel company, we reduce our carbon footprint by designing trips that are low carbon impact and carefully calculating the impact with the help of an environmental consultancy. We then buy carbon credit equivalents to offset all emissions that cannot be reduced including those resulting from our day-to-day business operations. Our offsetting is done through an energy efficient stoves project in Kenya. On request, every traveller receives their own PDF offset certificate post-travel. Wild Guanabana is the first carbon-neutral travel company in the Middle East & North Africa. Note: We do not sell or issue flight tickets ourselves so consequently we don't offset those emissions.
What does offsetting mean anyway?
It's a way of reducing your ecological impact by 'neutralizing' the impact of your carbon footprint. Actions associated with travel amount to around a third of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Carbon offsetting offers a solution to reduce the impact of your travel by purchasing carbon credits that are invested in activities that reduce CO2. While this doesn't erase all of the environmental impact, it does serve to help reinvest into the planet and contribute to activities which help its conversation. Itinerary Details / Price Inclusions & Exclusions
Day 1: To the Village of St. Catherine – 1,440m (L/D):
We meet at WG’s Headquarters at 4:00 am and start heading towards Egypt’s highest village, St. Catherine. The bus ride should take us between 7 and 9 hours with 2 stops in between. The bus will drop us off by Abou Seila and we’ll begin our adventure right then. After a 2 km hike, we’ll arrive to our first campsite by a garden amid the mountains.
Day 2: To Gebel el Naga and Farsh Tuweita – 1,300m (B/L/D):
Today, after breakfast, we’ll start our hike up to the top of Naga Mountain; the 6 km hike should take us no more than 3 hours. The scenery from the top of this 1,830m peak is one of the highlights of this trip, truly breathtaking! Afterwards, we’ll hike 5 km to Farsh Tuweita where we are going to be spending the night.
Day 3: To El Galt el Azraa and Farsh el Rumana (B/L/D):
We start our day with only a 2km walk to one of the most famous blue pools located amid the mountains of this region, it’s called El Galt el Azra2. There, we can enjoy a swim and the stunning nature in this location. We’ll then hike for 4 km to Farsh el Rumana where we are going to spend our night. This trail is only accessible by foot or camels; cars can’t pass through. So expect some challenging yet very enjoyable hikes today!
Day 4: To Gebel Abbas and St. Catherine Village (B/L/D):
Today, after a hearty breakfast, we’ll hike to Gebel Abbas, a distance of 6.5 km. The top of this historical mountain enables you to have a clear overview of the whole village of St. Catherine. The mountain is named after Abbas Basha who had tried to build a castle atop this mountain but died before its completion; the ruins of this castle are still there. We’ll hike our last 7 km to St. Catherine village where we’ll spend our last night.
Day 5: Back to the City (B):
We wake up for breakfast, have a walk in the city, and then head to St. Catherine’s Monastery for a quick visit. You can also get any souvenirs before we head back to Cairo. We’ll reach the tunnel of Ahmed Hamdi before the sunset.
Guidelines and Emergency:
You are here to enjoy the nature, not to harm it. Please take nothing but pictures, and leave nothing but your awesome vibe. Our WG journeys are tracked, the group’s movement is lively updated to our headquarters; and we will always take the move in time in case of any emergency.
All the adventurers participating in our journeys have to follow our WG leader. You must put on the protective gear when applicable. Always try as much as you can to walk in pairs. Never put your hand in a bush, or try to move the rocks; reptiles love these places. Try to always stay close to the group so that you can avoid getting lost. Never panic, our WG leader is well experienced to handle the situation. Always stay close to the group and to our WG leader; always inform any of your group mates if nature calls.
